Close The Doombringer's mouth
-all yours!

shut its trap, your pocket won't save you.

Doombringer’s Note

The Doombringer, (also known as Joey or Joey, The Doombringer in full), is an entity that appears when its modifier "Cheesed to meet you!" is activated. It can also be purchased in the Shop for 9999, allowing customers to equip it before the run. It can also be activated during Reprieve.

Appearance[]

Doombringers appear as small, four-legged rat-like creatures with multiple discerning features, such as beady eyes with the bottom eyelids half closed, large, plump bodies, shiny black noses, and doll-like mouths. A Doombringer also has four hemisphere-shaped feet with multiple creases in them, representing its toes. Doombringers also seem to have subtle fur when looked at closely. Doombringers also have ears situated at the back of their head and a short, segmented tail attached below its main torso. Generally, Doombringers bear a toy-like aesthetic.

Doombringers can come in different colors for their body and their skin. Their fur and skin can come in grey, brown, green, etc. However, Doombringers are officially portrayed with grey fur and tan limbs. Doombringers have a puppet-like appearance when screaming, being able to open its mouth at impossible widths unlike any other animal.

Behavior[]

Doombringers will appear in the pocket of players when enabled, either for individuals if they equip them before the game starts, or randomly when the "Cheesed to meet you!" Modifer is equipped. The players should immediately notice their items being shifted and recentered as Doombringer enters their item slots. Holding it out makes the player lay it out flat with its limbs resting on their hand.

When the players have one in their inventory, after going through a few rooms or immediately upon exiting a saferoom, it will randomly begin to start going into an enraged-like state, screaming, flailing its limbs and tail, and its item slot shaking and turning red. Once it starts screaming for a while (roughly for five seconds), it will immediately combust and explode in either the wielder's face or their pocket, instantly killing them. To suppress this deadly scream, the players must click[2] (or tap if on mobile, moving the camera also counts as tapping on mobile) while holding out Doombringer, letting them slam its mouth shut. However, if a player clicks while the Doombringer is not screaming they will pet it instead. Clicking and holding down while the Doombringer is not screaming will make the player pet it for as long as they hold down the button, preventing screaming while doing so.

If a player bought a Doombringer before a run, successfully shutting it up will give players a temporary speed boost through raising their Love.

An easy way to tell if a Doombringer is screaming when not holding it out is the border color of the item when start flashing red and shaking, but it can be easily missed if several entities are all attacking. Another cue is that Doombringer will start making muffled high-pitched whistling sound akin to that of a boiling kettle if left unchecked. There can also be multiple Doombringers in players' inventory with a modifier or commands, and each one will scream at a different time.

Players who die to Doombringer will be eviscerated and leave splotches of blood behind.

Parrying[]

In Reprieve, the player has the ability to parry entities. Doombringer can be parried right when it is about to explode even if it is not equipped, causing it to be removed from their inventory for the rest of the current floor.

Trivia[]

  • Doombringers are not real rats.[3]
  • Doombringer was inspired by an old inside joke between the developers, one of them being Simon where they had a large collection of "Joeys," typically being rats (among other animals).
  • The name Doombringer being given to a rat-like creature is a part of a trend where people give seemingly harmless, innocent animals very intimidating names to make the showcase of said animal surprising, such as a small kitten named Super Demon Killer or Galaxy Destroyer.
    • The only difference is that this creature is truly dangerous, enough to be worthy of its name.
  • By using godmode, players can see that Doombringer is removed from their inventories if it explodes. This implies that exploding kills itself.
    • The same thing happens in Reprieve upon parrying it.
  • Doombringer's scream is sampled from the screaming bird meme, though with major editing.
  • Doombringer's birthday is officially April 4th, also known as World Rat Day.
  • Doombringers (As stated by HexT, in the context of eating one of them) "arent meaty at all, they are like furbies..."[4]
  • Doombringers in saferooms make a subtle whimpering noise, as if trying to hold in their scream.
  • Doombringers hate pacifiers.
  • Pacifying a bought Doombringer giving Love could be interpreted as just general affection (just like with other animals, dogs for example), while a Modifier doesn't, implying that since the player technically didn't want it, they hate it, and therefore it doesn't award Love.
    • Although this is probably for gameplay reasons to encourage a burden, where as in the modifiers case it's covered by the +10% Saferoom XP.
  • In Reprieve, Doombringer has a unique screaming SFX and according to Simon, it is the sound of a machine gun.
  • The Doombringer is the only entity from the Grace gamemode within the "SIN" category of entities to be included in the Reprieve gamemode.
  • The "ALL OF THE RULES" badge is likely a reference to the "we're the rats" meme, more specifically the part which says "I'm the giant rat that makes all of the rules!". This is further backed up by Doombringer looking significantly bigger in the icon.
  • Doombringer has a dedicated card in Blox Cards, as part of the Grace X Blox Cards collab.
  • Doombringer is also a Greater Curse you can choose in Nullscape, as part of their collab with Grace.
    • In Nullscape, Doombringer can appear on a pedestal to then be selected on level 10 onwards.
